A second bomb has been defused in Strabane in the space of 24 hours.
The latest device – a viable pipe bomb – was discovered in an area known locally as Back Row (off Townsend Street) in the early hours of this morning.
Around 30 families were evacuated from their homes following the discovery of the device at around 1.00am.
British army technical offices (bomb squad) have removed the device for further examination and the families have been allowed to return to their homes.
Local police commander, Chief Inspector Andy Lemon, said while the latest device was “completely different” from the “large improvised” device discovered on the edge of the town’s golf course yesterday morning, it still had the capability to kill or injure.
Yesterday’s device, discovered at a gate leading into the golf course, was packed with explosives, nuts and bolts and, according to CI Lemon, had been intended for police.
CI Lemon said he believed dissident republicans were responsible for both devices.
