Andrew Taylor, the member of the Derry “Londonderry” Doire yacht who spent 90 minutes in the water after falling overboard earlier this week is in “good spirits,” skipper Andrew McCarter has said.
Andrew was speaking on day 16 of the race from China to San Francisco and revealed all on board where gearing up for the yacht’s arrival in Derry in 80 days time.
Andrew said: “I am happy to report that all is well aboard and things are back to normal, well, as far as normal goes with 17 people on a 70-foot yacht racing through the North Pacific.
“I was pleasantly surprised to see the smiling face of round the world crew member Andrew Taylor at breakfast this morning, thoroughly enjoying his porridge, the first decent meal since his ordeal.
“Another thing that we were surprised to see is that we haven’t lost too much ground on the leaders. It seems the top six boats are still within 70 miles of each other when their distances to the finish are compared.
The weather has been great with winds from the west south west at between 30 to 40 knots allowing us to keep high averages and put some decent miles away.
“The breeze moved forward a bit today and the difference on deck is like night and day. Yesterday was pleasant, today it’s like standing in front of a fire hose.
“On the helm earlier, a wave crashed over the stern and knocked my mug of tea out of my hand and over the side. That’s the second to go to the Great Pacific Garbage Patch this week.”
