Curtis Stigers and Kyle Eastwood, son of legendary Hollywood star Clint, are two of the flagship acts who will be appearing at this year’s City of Derry Jazz and Big Band Festival.
This year, as always, the festival will feature international, national and local acts in a line-up to please all musical tastes at almost 300 shows to be staged in nearly 60 venues across the city, including pubs, clubs, theatres, restaurants, cafes and shopping centres.
As always, the five-day event(1-5 May) – which attracted nearly 40,000 music lovers to the banks of the Foyle last year – will shine the spotlight on some of the brightest new names on the music scene.
Speaking at the launch of the festival in the Playhouse earlier tonight, renowned jazz musician Linley Hamilton, host of his own BBC Radio Ulster music show, said this year’s event would be the most exciting in its 13th year history.
He added: “It is not just about jazz, it is about every form of music.”
Mayor of Derry, Cllr Martin Reilly, said he expected the festival to attract its biggest ever number of visitors.
He added: “There will be national and international acts that will appeal to a wide-ranging audience.”
This year’s programme features a diverse range of talent, including some of the most formidable figures in jazz, blues, folk, rock and even traditional music.
Adding another music genre to the programme this year, folk fans will be thrilled to catch Kate Rusby whose stunning voice has earned her the title of the “Barnsley Nightingale.”
The star of all the best national folk festivals, her outstanding talent has been acknowledged with a much coveted Mercury Music Prize nomination.
Also appearing for the first time this year will be the talented Stephen James, who will bring his unique one-man show to the city to tell the story of popular 196os singing legend Frankie Valli.
Also debuting will be Ricky Cool and the In Crowd as well as Kane and Buille.
Curtis Stigers heads the list of artists making a return to the festival.
The multi platinum selling singer, saxophonist, songwriter and producer will be appearing in the intimate settings of the Jazz Spiegeltent for which only 300 tickets will be available.
Kyle Eastwood will also be performing at the Spiegeltent.
A universally respected musician, he has made a name for himself in the music industry with a sound that resonates with swing, groove and funk overtones.
