Mayor of Derry Cllr Martin Reilly has made contact with the skipper and crew of the Derry “LondonDerry” Doire Clipper yacht to extend his best wishes following the incident earlier this week involving crew member Andrew Taylor who was rescued from the Pacific Ocean in the early hours of Monday morning after falling overboard.
Mayor Reilly praised the efforts of the skipper Sean McCarter and his team saying their quick thinking and professional response had ultimately saved the life of their crew member.
Mayor Reilly said: “I have watched the footage several times of the rescue operation.
“It must have been a very traumatic experience for everyone involved but the excellent training and skills of the skipper and his crew contributed enormously to the successful rescue.
“I would like to extend the best wishes on behalf of the people of the city of Derry-Londonderry to Andrew and wish him a speedy recovery and extend our thanks to Sean and the crew for their efforts and support.”
“I am looking forward to meeting with Sean and the team at the next stop-over at San Francisco later this month when they will be given a hero’s welcome.”
He concluded: “The people of the city are very proud of the team and are looking forward to welcoming to their home port in June this year as part of our Foyle Maritime International Festival celebrations.”
