The scene of the run and hit incident in Boston.

A man from the Shantallow area of Derry has been killed in the US in a hit-and-run incident involving a bin lorry.

The man, who is in his 30s and whose name is not being released until all family members have been informed, was killed when the bicycle he was riding was struck by the lorry at the corner of Cambridge and Spice Streets in the Charlestown area of Boston.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Following the incident, Boston police appealed for information about the white garbage truck involved.

Since then,  a 41-year old  has appeared in court charged in connection with the incident.

Jake Wark, Suffolk County District Attorney, said Ricky Prezioso had been charged with leaving the scene of an accident causing death.

Prezisoso, who denies the charge, was released on $5,000 bail and will return to court on 19 May next.

Foyle SDLP MLA Pat Ramsey offered his sympathy to the dead man’s family.

He said: “My sincere sympathy to all the family and friends and our thoughts and prayers will continue for them at this most difficult of time.
