The new Bishop of Derry will be installed at a special ceremony in St Eugene’s Cathedal in the city this afternoon.
Most Rev Dr Donal McKeown, the former Auxiliary Bishop of Down and Connor will be installed to the position Archbishop Charles Brown, the Apostolic Nuncio to Ireland.
He succeeds Bishop Seamus Hegarty who retired in November 2011 on health grounds.
Bishop Hegarty, along with his predecessor, Bishop Edward Daly, will attend the installation which will be presided over by Cardinal Seán Brady as the Metropolitan Archbishop of the Province of Armagh.
Bishops from throughout the country will also be present as will priests from the Dioceses of Derry, Down and Connor, and other dioceses.
Also in attendance will be the Aide-de-Camp of the President of Ireland, Lt (NS) David Lyons, and the Lord-Lieutenant of the Derry, Angela Garvey.
Family, friends and specially invited guests will also attend the service which will get underway at 3.00pm.
Before the ceremony begins, the concelebrating clergy will walk in procession into the cathedral.
Following his installation, Bishop McKeown will greet in person everyone who attended the service.
Bishop McKeown will lead a diocese of 245,000 Catholics spread across 51 parishes and served by 104 diocesan priests on both sides of the border, consisting of Derry city, most of Co Derry as well as parts of Donegal, Tyrone and Antrim.
