Padraig Canavan.

One of Derry’s best known businessmen has been appointed to the board of Invest Northern Ireland.

Padraig Canavan is one of seven new appointees and will hold the position for three years.

Mr Canavan is currently chairperson a local lobby group for the expansion of the Magee campus of the University of Ulster in Derry.

He successfully established his own software business locally in 1994 with offices in London, New York, Singapore and India which he developed and later sold.

He previously worked as an IT consultant in London and is a past president of the Derry Chamber of Commerce.

He also served on the board of the local Software Industry Federation.

He was recently appointed the new chairperson of Hunter Apparel Solutions (HAS), Ireland’s leading bespoke corporate/work-wear uniform and PPE (personal protection equipment) supplier.

He does not hold any other public appointments.

Welcoming the appointment, Arlene Foster, Minister for Trade, Enterprise and Industry, said Mr Canavan would bring experience of starting and growing an SME (small, medium, enterprise), innovation knowledge and strategic thinking skills to the board.
