The funeral of the Derry man killed in a hit-and-run incident in the US last week will take place in his home town this weekend.
Eoin McGrory (34), originally from the Shantallow area of the city, died after being struck by a garbage truck while cycling in the Charlestown area of Boston on Thursday afternoon.
Members of his family have travelled to Boston to accompany his body home.
His remains are due back in Derry on Saturday and his Requiem Mass will take place in Our Lady’s Church at 12.15pm on Sunday.
He will be interred afterwards in Cockhill cemetery.
The youngest of a family of six – three boys and three girls – Eoin had been living in the US for the past 16 years, working in the construction industry and had been married to his wife, Shanique, for less than four months.
His parents, John and Teresa live at Earhart Park, having previously lived at Carrabane Walk in Shantallow.
His heartbroken mother said the family were overwhelmed by the support they have received since learning of the tragedy on Saturday.
“Everyone has been coming to us with tributes, money and food to help us. I want to thank everyone for their support,” she said.
A keen cyclist who won a number of competitions in Boston, the former Steelstown Primary School and Carnhill High School pupil was on a training run when the incident occurred.
The 41-year-old driver of the lorry has been charged in connection with the incident.
He is currently on $5,000 bail and is due to appear in court again next month.
