The owner of one of Derry’s most robbed convenience stores is to close his shop after another robbery at the store.
The latest incident at Academy Stores at Academy Road and De Burgh Terrace took place at around 9.00pm last night when a man entered the shop and threatened a female member of staff.
The shop was last robbed shortly before Christmas when a man made off with a sum of cash and cigarettes after threatening a staff member with a knife.
It had been previously targeted by robbers on a number of occasions.
According to SDLP Cllr Shauna Cusack the closing of the shop will result in five people losing their jobs.
Condemning the latest incident, Cllr Cusack said: “The owner has told me that after 13 years of hard graft and service to the community he can see no way forward when constantly targeting as an easy means of taking money.
“The people most set to lose are his five staff who will no longer have a job.”
Cllr Cusack called on anyone with information about the incident to contact the police.
