The newly-installed Catholic Bishop of Derry, Most Rev Dr Donal McKeown, has said he is looking forward to working with his Protestant counterpart “for the common good.”
Bishop McKeown was speaking after meeting Derry and Raphoe Church of Ireland Bishop Ken Good in the Church of Ireland See House.
Dr McKeown was installed as the new Bishop of Derry on Sunday last at a ceremony held in St Eugene’s Cathedral which was attended by Bishop Good.
Talking of the contribution of the Church to the community Bishop McKeown said: “I believe that it is Springtime and not winter for the Church because I see possibilities for life and growth.
“I believe the Church is trying to define a new role for itself in our society here. That is a process that I welcome rather than fear.”
He added: “Bishop Good and I share a commitment to seeing the Church serve our community in ways that bring hope and healing for every part of it. For that reason I look forward to a future where we can work together for the common good.”
Speaking after a meeting between the two church leaders yesterday, Bishop Good said: “I have known Bishop Donal for many years.
“Knowing his work to build relationships across divides I believe we will work together fruitfully for the common good.
“We will work to build bridges that will benefit every part of our community.”
Hours before the Sunday’s installation service, Bishop McKeown visited the neighbouring Church of Ireland congregation at Christ Church where prayed with the Christ Church parishioners and received a gift from their minister, Reverend Robert Millar.
