The “crude but viable” device discovered under a car in Derry yesterday was an under-car booby trap bomb, police have confirmed.
The device was discovered in the driveway of a house at Talbot Park at around 1.30pm.
Police have also confirmed she touched the device before realising what it was.
She then phoned her husband who subsequently contacted police.
The street, one of Derry’s most affluent, was sealed off and a number of residents moved from their homes for several hours while British army technical officers (bomb squad) carried out a controlled explosion.
PSNI Chief Inspector Jon Burrows said it was believed the device had been attached to the car for some time and there was a likelihood children were in the vehicle at some stage.
CI Burrows said police were investigating a motive for the attack, stating it was “slightly more unconventional.”
Ruling out a connection to the police or prison services, he said it was unlikely dissident republicans were responsible, stating the motivation “might be slightly different.”
Police have asked anyone who may have noticed any suspicious activity in the Talbot Park area recently to contact them at Strand Road on the non-emergency number 101.
A PSNI spokesperson said information could also be passed anonymously through the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
