Derry City’s Council’s support for this year’s Foyle Cup has been welcomed by local Sinn Féin Councillor Eric McGinley.
This year’s event – taking place from 21 – 26 July – has attracted over 200 teams who will compete in a number of categories and see Derry will host thousands of visitors during the course of the competition.
Teams from throughout Ireland and overseas will compete in the tournament which this year will feature two new age groups – under 12 and 14 girls.
Cllr McGinley said “year after year, the Foyle Cup exceeded expectations in terms of numbers competing in the competition and visiting the city.
He added: “Derry City Council will be primarily responsible for supplying many of the pitches but council staff will also assist with organisational issues such as stewarding, pitch maintenance, toilet provision and administration.”
Cllr McGinley said the Council’s support for the tournament represented a significant investment on behalf of the city and district and he called on other agencies and departments to assist the organisers in meeting the demands of the event.
He concluded: “I would take this opportunity to congratulate everyone involved in putting the Foyle Cup together and to wish them every success for this year’s tournament.”
