Funding of almost £30,000 for lighting and landscaping works is to give the Unity sculpture in the Galliagh area of Derry a new sparkle.
The sculpture, located on the roundabout at St Joseph’s Church (White Chapel) was erected in 2010 as a result of funding,.
The structure, by renowned sculptor Maurice Harron, portrays a symbol of unity among the people of the city and, at the same time, is a modern piece of craftsmanship that has become a focal point in the Galliagh estate.
The latest funding will install lighting and landscaping around the sculpture which will help to enhance it further and complete the installation.
The project is being managed and delivered by Derry Council and is due to be completed shortly.
Mayor of Derry Cllr Martin Reilly the Unity sculpture was a “very unique” art-piece that when complete would not only become a focal point for the local community and help promote civic pride and community ownership in the Galliagh area but would enhance the entire area in terms of social and physical renewal.
The news has been welcomed by Sinn Fein councillor for the area Elisha McCallion who had called for the upgrading of the site to be made a priority.
She said: “The Galliagh area sees a lot of traffic travelling through it; therefore it is vital that the area looks clean and tidy and we send out a positive image.”
Announcing the funding Social Development Minister Nelson McCausland said the works would enhance the area, not only for the local residents but also for the many visitors to the Galliagh area of the city.
He added: “The project will complete this very symbolic piece of art enhancing it both by day and night. The works will enhance this neighbourhood renewal area, not only for the local residents but also for the many visitors to this area of the city.”
