News that Greenfield Residential Home in Strabane is to remain open has been described as “great news” by West Tyrone MLA Michaela Boyle.
The Melmount Road care home is one of 18, which had been earmarked for closure, that have been given a reprieve by Health Minister Nelson McCausland.
Ms Boyle said confirmation the homes were to remain open were given in a letter to her Sinn Fein party colleague Maeve McLaughlin, chairperson of the Stormont Health Committee.
The letter stated, “I am writing to the committee to advise that it is my intention to move quickly to reassure permanent residents within those homes.
“I am clear that existing residents will be allowed to remain in their home for as long as they wish and so long as their needs can continue to be met there.”
Ms Boyle said while the news would be met with “great relieve” by all concerned the “new admissions issue” needed to be clarified to “engender confidence” in long term sustainability of NHS residential care homes.
Thackery residential care home in Limavady is among the 18 also given a reprieve.
