Derry City are still waiting on their first away win in this season’s SSE Airtricity Premier Division after coming away from the Carlisle Grounds a fortunate 0-0 draw against Bray Wanderers.
In a game the visitors were always second best, the Brandywell club have goalkeeper Gerard Doherty and poor finishing by the home side to thank for their point from the game.
Derry were totally outplayed in the first period and Doherty came to their rescue with several brilliant saves.
Bray wasted a golden opportunity to open the scoring by missing a penalty.
Doherty was called into action as early as the sixth minute when pulled off a excellent save to push away a deflected free kick from Kelly.
Doherty came to Derry’s rescue eight minutes later when he pulled off another fantastic save, this time to deny Akinade.
The Derry keeper got lucky five minutes later, when his attempted clearance from a poor Byrne back pass was blocked goalwards by Akinade but Barry got back to clear.
Bray should have taken the lead in the 29th minute but Webster blasted wide when it looked easier to score after being set up by a quickly taken Kelly free-kick.
Barry had a chance to put Derry in front in the 35th minute when got his head to a corner ball at the back post but put his effort over the bar.
Bray were awarded a penalty in the 41st minute after Ventre handled in the box but Kelly’s spot kick crashed off the bar and onto the line and out with Doherty beaten.
Cassidy blazed the rebound over the bar.
Bray had strong claims for a second penalty in injury time when Cassidy was brought down by Barry but the referee waved play on.
Derry had the first chance of the second half but Enda Curran’s curling free kick round the wall was held well by McGuinness.
Doherty again saved well in the 63rd to deny Scully after good work by Webster and O’Neill and again six minutes later when he tipped a Kelly effort round the post.
Bray keeper McGuinness saved easily from John Paul McGovern in the 81st minute but reacted brilliantly three minutes later when he got down low to save well from Patterson.
Bray wasted a golden opportunity to grab all three points three minutes from time when a Kelly corner found Scully who headed over from the edge of the six yard box.
Duffy almost grabbed an undeserved winner three minutes later through Duffy.
