Police can issue a fixed penalty notices to a motorists who causes “genuine obstruction” by parking on pavements, Regional Development Minister Danny Kennedy has said.
Mr Kennedy was responding to a question put to him in the Assembly by Derry SDLP MLA Pat Ramsey who asked him what steps he was taking to stop drivers parking on pavements and casuing problems for blind or partially sighted pedestrians.
In response, Mr Kennedy said: “Where a vehicle is found to be causing a genuine obstruction by parking on the footway, the police can issue a fixed penalty notice therefore I would advise anyone encountering persistent difficulties to contact their local police.
“There is, however, no general prohibition on vehicles parking on footways, with the exception of heavy commercial vehicles.
“Traffic Attendants can act where there is some form of parking restriction on the adjacent stretch of road and these restrictions will generally be indicated by signing.”
Mr Kennedy concluded: “Where a vehicle is found to be parked on a footway in contravention of any restriction, a Penalty Charge Notice will be issued.”
