Stephen Orr (11) took full advantage of glorious weather and a course in absolutely pristine condition to record a fabulous winning 41 points in Easter Saturday Hamper competition played at City of Derry Club yesterday.
A rather mundane 18 points over the first nine gave no indication of the fireworks to follow, he dropped only one shot to par on that stretch for a massive 23 points and victory by one point over Trevor Heywood (21) who was a model of consistency scoring 20 points on each nine to secure his prize.
No less than five players battled it out for third place with David Smyth (13) taking the honours on the count back with 22 of his 39 points total coming on the vital second nine.
Spare a thought for Prehen’s oldest competitive golfer Bert Whoriskey (16) who was one of the quintets on 39 points but still managed a reduction in handicap and now plays off 15 at the grand old age of 83.
Aaron Taylor (2) took the gross prize with his 35 points and we must mention Ben Leonard (7) who scored 37 points, an unremarkable score normally but Ben blanked the first four holes so 37 points for 14 holes over the long layout is surely a club record.
