A motorist escaped injury when the windscreen of his car was smashed while he was driving along Fountain Street in Strabane yesterday.
Strabane Sinn Féin Councillor Jay McCauley said the man had a “lucky escape” and was left “deeply shocked” following in the incident which occurred around teatime.
According to Cllr McCauley the windscreen was smashed by a water balloon, believed to have contained stones, thrown from high ground at “The Gap” above.
Cllr McCauley said: “A group of youths congregated at what is locally known as ‘The Gap’ around tea time yesterday and began firing water balloons and eggs at passing motorists, motorcyclists, and pedestrians on Fountain Street below.
“A local motorist who had just left a child off nearby was travelling back down Fountain Street when his windscreen was smashed by one such water balloon which is also believed to have contained stones.
“This could have had disastrous consequences if, as a result, he had of lost control of his car.
“I spoke with the driver after the incident and he is deeply shocked at what has happened and asked me to highlight this in an effort to impress upon those responsible just how dangerous and totally reckless their actions are.’
Cllr McCauley concluded: “People in the local area are angered at what has happened to this driver and other people who were similarily targeted and those involved in this type of anti-community activity need to begin to ‘think before they act’.”
