Derry Sinn Fein will field 14 candidates in next month’s local government elections.
Ten outing councillors and four new candidates were joined by Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness when they handed in their nominations for the 22 May election.
BALLYARNETT
Elected in 2005, was the first Sinn Féin chairperson of the District Policing Partnership in 2009 and is the current chairperson of the Development Committee within Derry City Council which is in charge of Arts and Culture initiatives, festivals, Economic Development and Funding.
Currently holds positions on numerous organizations both locally and nationally including the Port and Harbour Commissioners, Rainbow Child and Family Centre, Off the Streets youth initiative and many more.
Has been a member of Sinn Féin for almost 40 years and is the party spokesperson on housing in Derry.
Has been chairperson on a number of Council committees during his time in office and has been involved waste management issues.
Is a board member of the Greater Shantallow Area Partnership and works closely with many community, residents, tenants groups and associations.
A candidate who has been the chairperson of Shantallow Sinn Féin for the last three years.
Has worked in the field of housing and homelessness for 15 years and heads up a service within First Housing, helping to prevent homelessness among young people in the city.
Has been a board member of the Citizens Advice Bureau in Derry for more than eight years and also sits on the Board of Governors of St. Columb’s College.
Plays a leading role in St. Joseph’s Amateur Boxing Club in Galliagh.
FAUGHAN
Has been a member of Sinn Féin from the age of 16 and has represented the party at many youth conferences held throughout Ireland.
Has travelled on international delegations to the European Parliament in Brussels and also travelled on an aid convoy to Gaza in Palestine.
Is keen athlete and passionate about fundraising for many local charities.
Having studied history and social anthropology in Queens University he has a keen interest in the history and culture of Ireland.
Is a volunteer and relief worker in the Foyle Haven which provides services for vulnerable adults.
Is also involved in several community groups within the Waterside.
First elected in 2001 to the rural ward and for the past 13 years, served as Mayor of Derry from 2009-2010, has been the chair of the Policing and Community Safety Partnership.
During his time on Derry City Council he has been the chairperson of a number of committees including Planning and Policy and Resources.
FOYLESIDE
First elected as a Sinn Féin representative to Derry City Council in 2001.
Has served on a number of key Council Committees and Outside Boards including: chairperson of City Marketing and Development, chairperson of Derry City Council’s Planning and Regional Services Committees.
Has represented Derry City Council as a member of the North West Region Cross Border Group for five years including a year as chairperson.
Served on the NWRCBG Interreg partnership board and represented Sinn Féin on the Interreg Steering and Monitoring Committees.
Is a member of the Statutory Transition Committee tasked with the formation of the new Derry and Strabane Council.
Is also the current chairperson of Planning in Derry City Council.
Sinn Féin representative on the North West Region Cross Border Group and represented the party on the Board of Culture Company 2013 (tasked with delivery of year as City of Culture 2013).
A member of Sinn Féin for over 20 years was selected for co-option onto Derry City Council in 2012.
A member of the Outer West Partnership Board which is involved in a number of community based initiatives across the Ballymagroarty, Buncrana Road, Foyle Springs, Glen, Hazelbank and Rosemount areas.
Has been involved in a number of community safety projects and is presently a member of the Policing & Community Safety Partnership and the City of Derry Airport Board.
Recently brought forward a motion to Council calling for the establishment of a Youth Quarter for young people in the city.
Holds triple degrees from the University of Ulster in Irish History & Politics and Computing.
A well-known tour guide in the city, with a passion for preserving local history and building the tourism and social economy sectors in the greater Bogside area.
Has served on a number of bodies including ERNACT, Walled City Partnership and the board of City of Culture, with whom he is working on a number of legacy projects.
THE MOOR
Joined the Council in 2010 and successfully got a motion passed at Derry City Council in support of the scheme and lobbied the Minister for Employment and Learning.
In 2012 successfully got a motion passed at Derry City Council which seen the installation of life saving defibrillator machines at council sports facilities.
Elected in 2005, is is a keen Irish language activist and holds a degree in Irish Language and literature and is a member of the board of governors for Gaelscoil Éadain Mhóir.
Was re-elected in 2011 and served as the Deputy Mayor for 2011-2012 and was subsequently selected to serve as Mayor of the city for 2012-2013.
Also works for the people of the Creggan area as a member of the Triax Neighbourhood Management Team who have been involved in the regeneration of the area including the new Bishop’s Field District Play Park.
At 37, is the eldest of 11 children, born and raised in Creggan where he has lived for most of his life.
Has a HND in Business & IT.
Has been the vice chair of Derry Sinn Féin since 2010 and is chairperson of the trade union NIPSA Branch 73, based at Waterside House.
Is also a member of the Derry Trades Union Council.
Elected in 2005. is the Sinn Féin spokesperson on Education and Children & Young People in Derry.
A member of the board of governors of St Cecilia’s College and Bligh’s Lane Nursery.
WATERSIDE
A married mother of one, lives and works in the Waterside.
Has a master’s degree and PhD in computer science as well as over ten years’ experience in the computing sector in both the private and higher education sector.
After moving into the community sector she took up position as strategy manager with the Waterside Neighbourhood Partnership.
Lives locally with his partner and two children, is currently the vice chairperson of the Sean Dolan Sinn Féin Cumann – Waterside and served as the election agent for Councillor Lynn Fleming during the 2011 local council elections.
Involved with a number of community groups in the Greater Top of the Hill area.
