Institute have won the Championship title and, more importantly, have been promoted to the Premiership in a nail-biting end to the season.
Paul Kee’s side easily defeated basement club Limavady United at Drumahoe.
The Derry side had gone into the game a point behind league leaders Bangor who were strongly fancied to record a home win over sixth placed Harland and Wolff Welders.
Despite Insitute being two up at half-time, the Seasiders appeared to be on their way to being crowned champions through a Jordan Forsythe strike.
However, a Josh Cahoon equaliser for the Welders swung the title Stute’s way.
At Drumahoe, Stephen O’Donnell put Institute ahead in the 30th minute with a back post header from a free kick, his first touch after replacing captain Paddy McLaughlin who was carried off with what appeared to be a severe hamstring injury.
Michael McCrudden put Stute firmly in control with a brilliant shot on the run 10 minutes later.
Institute went looking for their 100th goal of the season but Limavady goalkeeper Corey Wilson was on hand to deny Varma on two occasions and Hume who had replaced Stephen O’Flynn.
There wild celebrations at the Riverside when news came through that Bangor had failed to gain the win they required – Institute winning the title by a single point.
