Police in Derry have warned motorists of the consequences of failing to keep car keys secure.
Police said it was “becoming clear” vehicle owners in the city were not being careful
A PSNI spokesperson said: “We have come across cases of spare keys being left in vehicles, which is an all too obvious opportunity for a thief to steal them.
“And if that is not bad enough, some two-car families are locking one car, but leaving its spare keys in an unlocked vehicle alongside.
“That has led to thieves passing up on the unlocked car, but driving away in the other.”
The spokesperson concluded: “Car keys are precious – most modern cars cannot be stolen without them. When you are not driving, keep all vehicle keys secure in your home.”
