The North’s political parties have been called on to support the Sinn Féin motion before the Assembly tomorrow calling for the introduction of legislation to guarantee marriage equality.
The call comes from Derry Sinn Fein local election candidate Liam Friel who said marriage equality would give gay, lesbian, bi-sexual and transgender people equal rights under the law in relation to marriage.
He added: “Other jurisdictions on these islands have and are moving forward to ensure marriage equality for all. The North should not be left behind
“Giving all couples equal marriage rights under the law does not threaten anyone’s beliefs, religious or otherwise. Churches are free to define marriage as they wish but the state has a duty to treat all citizens equally.”
Mr Friel concluded: “This Assembly needs to send out a clear message to the LGB&T community that it will support their full rights.”
