Drumkeen Utd 2 Derry City Res 3
All the talk before this 4 Lanterns Ulster Senior League game was the inclusion of last season’s Airtricity Premiership top goalscorer Rory Patterson in the Derry City line-up but by the end of the 90 minutes it was the name of Nathan Boyle that as on everyone’s lips.
The home side took the lead in the 17th minute when David Shovlin ran from his own half to set up Conor Carlin just inside the penalty area go gave advancing keeper Michael Lynch no chance.
The goal came from the only clear-cut chance of the first half in which the Drumkeen defence kept Patterson well shackled allowing him only the one effort at goal – a shot which he put narrowly wide after the ball fell to him from a corner.
The game really came to life at the start of the second half, when keeper Lynch’s long clearance was headed on by Patterson into the path of Boyle who fired home from the right side of the penalty box for the equaliser.
Patterson and Conor McDermott had efforts saved by Stephen Conroy before Boyle worked his way in from the right and fired across the goal into the net at the far post.
The home side drew level eight minutes when Darren McCready scored from he penalty spot.
However, Derry went ahead again two minutes later when Boyle completed his hat-trick saw off the challenge of a Drumkeen defender to find the back of the next.
The win lifts Derry joint top with Cockhill Celtic for whom former Derry City midfielder Gerry Gill set up the only goal for the game for Garbhain Friel in the Buncrana’s win over Letterkenny Rovers.
