Local men over 50 are being encouraged to try out a new physical activity concept which is the first of its kind in Northern Ireland – walking football.
The Western Health and Social Care Trust is working with Derry City Council, Limavady Borough Council, Strabane District Council, Derry City Football Club, Institute Football Club and local community organisations (Time to Choose and HURT) to challenge football fans over 50 to come off the sidelines or sofas and onto the pitch to test their footwork by playing Danderball, the North West’s version of walking football.
John Mahon, Community Support Services for Drugs and Alcohol with the Western Trust said Walking Football is similar to five-a-side football but the difference was that players were not allowed to run, jog or sprint whether on or off the ball.
He added: “Walking football programmes are well established throughout England, Scotland and Wales within local football clubs and community Trusts and many even have their own walking football leagues.
“We felt this would be a great way to promote the health and well-being of men over 50 and we’re delighted that local councils are helping us introduce the sport to Northern Ireland. At first people laughed at idea of danderball, but when you see a game in action – it’s actually a lot more skilful than you think.
“It’s good exercise, great craic and a chance to get out of the house and socialise with other men.”
Lesley Finlay, Physical Activity Co-ordinator with the Western Trust’s Health Improvement Department said: “Danderball is a fun, innovative way of engaging men over 50 in physical activity.
“If there are any football fans out there who feel unable to participate in contact football due to their health, fitness or age we’d encourage them to come and see what walking football is all about.”
If interested drop into to a taster sessions being held from from 2.00 pm – 4.00pm in Templemore Sports Complex on Wednesday 7 May; Riversdale Leisure Centre, Strabane on Thursday, 8 May; or Roe Valley Leisure Centre, Limavady on Friday 9 May.
