The SDLP is the only party offering people “real change for the better” in this month’s elections, Jim McKeever, SDLP candidate in the Faughan district electoral area, has said.
Speaking after the launch of the SDLP’s local government and European election campaigns in the Waterfront Hall in Belfast, Mr McKeever said the 22 May elections would be fought on the issues that affect “hard presse households, farmers, fishermen, young people and small businesses.
He added: “Our young people continue to face an uphill struggle for employment.
“With our colleagues in the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats, we are committed to the European Youth Guarantee to provide a tailored job or training opportunity within four months of leaving education.
“We will also seek an obligation to provide professional careers advice to all Year 10 and 13 pupils, as well as a teachers-in-business development programme.
“We also believe that house building targets for social affordable homes must be doubled to tackle the North’s housing crisis and will stand strong alongside the vulnerable in opposition to the British Government’s bedroom tax.
“These elections offer an opportunity for change. We have the chance to be strong in Europe and decisive at home.”
At the launch Mr McKeever met with Martin Schulz, MEP, president of the European Parliament whom he met on a previous visit to Brussels in October 2007.
Mr McKeever concluded: “The SDLP is proud of the strong endorsement of the SDLP given by Martin Schultz, and on a personal level his best wishes for my campaign in the DEA of Faughan.”
