The PSNI is to seek more time to question Sinn Fein president Gerry Adams, Deputy First Minister and party colleague Martin McGuinness has said.
The Sinn Fein leader is being held in Antrim police station where he is being questioned about the murder of Belfast mother of 10 Jean McConville in 1972.
The Louth TD was arrested when he presented himself to detectives at the serious crime suite around 7.00pm on Wednesday night.
The 65-year-old went voluntarily with his solicitor by prior arrangement to meet with the PSNI’s Terrorist Investigation Unit.
However, on arrival he was formally arrested and cautioned.
He can be held for up to 48 hours before either being released or charge.
However, the PSNI can apply to a court for an extension to his detention to carry out further questioning.
Mr Adams’ detention has been criticised by Mr McGuinness who said RUC “old guard” within the PSNI were behind the arrest in an attempt to influence the outcome of this month’s European and local government elections.
