A Derry City local government election candidate was back “knocking on doors” last night less than 24 hours he was viciously beaten while out canvassing.
Outgoing SDLP Cllr Jimmy Carr and his mother, Marie, were assaulted by a man and a woman while canvassing in Carnhill on Tuesday night.
The attack, after which a 28-year-old man and a 27-year-old woman were arrested, was not politically motivated.
The 26-year-old councillor vowed not to let the incident deter him from canvassing and was out calling on doors again last night, although he was not accompanied his mother who was “not too well.”
Cllr Carr said he was overwhelmed by the support he has received following the incident.
Speaking last night, he said: “Never have I ever experienced what I did yesterday, and never have I ever had such wonderful support from so many of you wonderful people.
“It’s extremely humbling and I’m proud to say I represent the people of this city.
“To each and every one of you, I thank you, words can’t describe how grateful I am for the support.
“I’m sure I’m speaking on behalf of my dear mother also.
“It’s overwhelming how many people actually do care.”
He concluded: “We will not be deterred. We are a tight unit and we will remain a tight unit. God is very good to us. Thank you all again from the bottom of my heart.”
