The PSNI recently launched a new non-emergency telephone number.
Any member of the public now wishing to speak to the police about a non-emergency matter should dial 101.
The new number replaces the 0845 600 8000 number.
An awareness campaign has been running over the past number of weeks to promote the new number and advise the public when the new 101 number should be used and when the emergency 999 number should be used.
Foyle Area Commander, Chief Inspector Jon Burrows, said the new number offered “real benefits” for the public, remove confusion and make it simpler for the public to contact the police.
He added: “I would urge everyone to use the new 101 number for non emergency calls which will help free up the 999 system for real emergencies such as reporting crimes in progress or advising police of individuals in immediate danger.
“This will ensure that the police can deal with real emergencies in a more timely and effective manner.”
Alderman Drew Thompson, chairperson of the Derry Policing and Community Safety Partnership, said the new number made it “much easier” for the public to contact the police and ensure that resources were targeted and prioritised for emergency situations.
He added: “The ongoing awareness campaign will help the public to understand when to use the non-emergency 101 number and when to call 999.”
Ald Thompson concluded: “I am hopeful that this initiative will further improve the service provided by the police.”
