Claims of political interference in the appointments to senior positions in the PSNI have been rejected by Derry MLA Raymond McCartney, vice-chairperson of the Stormont Justice Committee.
Mr McCartney described such claims as “mischievous and unhelpful.”
He said: “In recent days there have been a number of mischievous and unhelpful reports suggesting that in some way Sinn Féin is attempting to block individuals from senior positions within the PSNI.
“Let me be clear, this is absolutely not the case.
“Any appointment to senior positions is done through a public appointment system, which includes rigorous safeguards.”
He concluded: “All appointments are made solely on the basis of merit.”
