A special children’s duathlon is to be held in Derry later this month to mark the visit to the city of the Commonwealth Games Baton.
The Baton – the Commonwealth Games equivalent to the Olympic Torch – will be brought to the city by local triathlete and Olympian Aileen Morrison on 20 May.
The Baton Relay set off from London on 9 October last and has returned to the British Isles having visited 63 nations and territories in Asia, Oceania, Africa, Americas (south), Caribbean and Americas (north).
By the time it finishes its worldwide journey at the opening ceremony of the 20th Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on 23 July, it will have covered 118,000 miles in 288 days.
Within the top of the Baton are granite gemstones, with one given to each place visits as a memento of the relay.
To celebrate its visit to Derry, Derry City Council is staging a Kids Duathlon at Prehen playing fields on Wednesday, 21 May at 3.30pm, featuring a 400 metre run, a 500 metre bike ride and a further 400 metre run all on grass and using mountain bikes.
The age group will be eight to 11 years and the event is free with each participant receiving a commemorative goodie bag.
The event will be a timed event and with trophies for first, second and third boy and girl.
Co-ordinator Thomas McCallion said places were limited and were on a first come first served basis.
He added: “I expect places to fill quickly and once filled their will be no more names added to it.”

Places are also limited for this event and the race will cost £8 to non-triathlon members and £5 to members.
To book a place, competitors must request and return an application form from Council (see contact details above) with the event fee.
Last year, over 300 children took part.
