A vigil held in Derry at lunchtime today heard calls for the release of the 276 schoolgirls currently being held captive by mililtant extremists in Africa.
Concern is growing worldwide for the welfare of the pupils, between the ages of 15 and 18, who were forcibly taken by armed Boko Haram militia from their school in Chibok in north eastern Nigeria on 14 April last.
Today’s vigil was organised by Ógra Shinn Féin in support of the youngsters.
Michael McCrossan, Ógra Shinn Féin chairperson, condemned the actions of Boko Haram and called for their release.
He said the event, which was attended by over 50 people, was held so to send out the message that the acrtions of the group were “totally unacceptable.”
Among those in attendance was Sinn Fein MEP Martina Anderson and pupils from local schools.
