Fans’ favourite Peter Hutton has been appointed manager of Derry City.
The 41-year-old, who had been Roddy Collins assistant at Brandywell prior to the Dubliner leaving the club at the weekend, has been put in charge of his home town club until the end of the season.
A former Derry City captain, who was installed as caretaker manager following Collins’ departure on Sunday, Hutton holds the record for the number of appearances for the Candystripes, turning out over 600 times during three separate stints at the Brandywell, from 1990 to 2009.
Another former Derry player, Marty McCann, the club’s first-team coach during Collins’ reign, will serve as Hutton’s assistant.
In a statement, Derry’s board of directors confirmed Hutton had been offered and accepted the position of first team manager to the end of the season.
The statement added: “The board would like to urge all fans to get behind Peter and his assistant Marty McCann in the coming weeks and months and hopefully we will be celebrating success at the end of the season again.”
Hutton managed North West neighbours Finn Harps for 18 months before resigning in October to team up with Collins at the Brandywell and has acted as caretaker manager Brandywell on two previous occasions.
Meanwhile, the new Derry management team has got the backing of former boss, Declan Devine, who was in charge at Brandywell prior to Collins’ arrival.
Stating he was writing “purely as a fan,” he posted a message on social media – – prior to Hutton and McCann being confirmed as the new City management team – calling for fans to get behind the duo and the team.
He said: “Derry needs a professional football club and we must get behind the club at all times.
“I wish Peter and Marty best wishes this week and think we all need to get to next home game and show people that we really are a footballing city.
