A young Derry school girl is being tipped for a promising career in women’s football after captaining Northern Ireland at a major international football tournament.
Rachel Barnaby, a pupil at St Mary’s College, led the Northern Ireland under-15 soccer team who took park in the Bob Docherty Football Tournament in Repton High School in Derby, England, competing against teams from Slovakia, Wales and the Republic of Ireland.
Rachel, the only Derry representative on the NI team, said it was honoured to have captained the team.
She said: “It was a privilege to be chosen as captain of the NI team and I was extremely proud to have been selected as NI player of the tournament. It was an amazing trip and I really enjoyed the experience”
St Mary’s principal, Marie Lindsay, said the entire school was proud of Rachel’s achievement.
She said: “Rachel is fantastic talent who will go far. We are so proud of Rachel’s achievement at St Mary’s.
Rachel has attended Northern Ireland trials since the age of 10 and has progressed through county training to international representation.
She has been a valuable member of St Mary’s soccer team, captaining her school team to success both indoor and outdoor.
As captain Rachel, led St Mary’s to success in the Northern Ireland School Girls Championships in 2012 -2013.
She also captained the school to success in the 2013-2014 indoor season as St Mary’s finished second in Northern Ireland.
