A senior PSNI officer has called on government to beef up staff numbers – and do it quickly.
Chief Supt Nigel Grimshaw made the call during the annual meeting of the superintendents association which was attended by Chief Constable Matt Baggott and Justice Minister David Ford.
He was speaking as the PSNI launched a new recruitment campaign which will see information sessions held in the North West.
CS Grimshaw said numbers had been “depleted” over the years which left the PSNI severely stretched.
He said: “Within the context of the ongoing level of threat, our current operating environment and the likely demands over the forthcoming years, we are firmly of the view that we need more officers and staff, and we need them expeditiously!”
Recruitment information sessions will take place in the Everglades Hotel in Derry on Thursday next, 22 May, and Friday, 6 June,
Sessions will also take place in the Alley Theatre in Strabane on 30 May and in the Lurach Centre in Maghera on Tuesday, 10 June.
Each session will last between 30 and 40 minutes, with the first beginning at 10.00am and the last at 7.00pm on each day.
Sessions are also being held in Newry, Dungannon, Belfast, Cookstown, Ballycastle and Downpatrick.
Online applications for the role of police constable will open on 28 May and the deadline to complete applications is 5.00pm on 20 June.
