Rev Malcolm Ferry was last night instituted as the new rector of one of Derry’s oldest churches.
Rev Ferry takes over the post at St Augustine’s Church following Rev Pat Storey becoming the first ever bishop in the Anglican Church.
Rev Storey was consecrated Bishop as the Church of Ireland Bishop of Meath and Kildare in November last.
Last night’s institution ceremony was performed by Church of Ireland Bishop of Derry Ken Good and was attended by Mayor of Derry, Cllr Martin Reilly, two African bishops and Bishop of Clogher John McDowell, who was the preacher.
Before taking up his new post Rev Ferry was Rector of the Waterside parish of All Saints Clooney.
During his time there, he oversaw the major renovation project of the All Saints Parish Centre and the development of a significant range of outreach programmes into the local community.
A wide range of family, friends, parishioners and colleagues from across the community attended last night’s service.
Speaking prior to the service, Rev Ferry said he was looking forward to the challenges his new appointment would bring.
He said: “My years working with the people of All Saints Clooney have been really fulfilling and happy.
“However, I am looking forward to the fresh opportunities of working with the parishioners of St Augustine’s and to the future.”
Bishop of Derry and Raphoe, Rev Ken Good said Rev Ferry would bring “great creativity and experience” to his new role in St Augustine’s.
He added: “He has shown a real commitment to engaging with the local community in Clooney and leaves that parish well placed for the future.”
Rev Ferry served as rector of Castlerock following his theological training in the Church of Ireland Theological College and ordination in 1996.
Married to Carol, a qualified pharmacist, they have three children, James, Sarah and Rebekah.
