Single figure golfers took the major honours in the Dermot McDermott Memorial Cup played yesterday at City of Derry Golf Club.
Pride of place went to Alan Philson (9) with an excellent 41 points that included no less than three twos at the first, eighth and 12th holes.
Terry Coyle (7) needed a favourable tie-break to take second place with 38 points with the 21 points scored on the back nine making the significant impact.
Interestingly enough was the fact that neither player was able to par the seventh hole, “Dermot’s,” named to honour the memory of the former captain, president and honorary secretary of the club.
Tom McDermott (24), no relation, finished in third place also on a tie-break with another 38 points and the gross with 35 points went to Ernie Heywood (1)
Big Turnout for Weekly Thursday Open
There was a huge turnout for the popular weekly Thursday Open at Prehen with quite a few visitors enjoying golf on an immaculately prepared course, especially the greens that are running fast and true.
Taking full advantage on the day was Trevor Heywood (20) who shrugged off a rather indifferent 15 points on the front nine with a superbly compiled 24 points on the back nine and a winning total of 39 points overall.
Early starter, the prodigiously long hitter Tom McClintock (12) had 23 points on his front nine but faltered on the home stretch with a measly 15 points that still was good enough to take second place on 38 points.
Dean Nutt (20) collected his first ever golfing prize taking third place albeit on a tie break with 36 points.
Former member Brian Wallace (7) and now domiciled in Dunfanaghy Golf Club had 36 points also to take the visito’s prize. 34 points was the winning gross score by Kealan Quigg (+1).
Thursday Opens continue right through to October.
