The Western Health and Social Services Trust is inviting applications for funding from community and voluntary groups in the Western Trust area.
Funding is available to support groups to provide social inclusion opportunities to adults with a learning disability while at the same time affording their parents and carers, who are approximately 50 years of age or over, some time away from their caring role.
The Trust’s Voluntary/Community Grants Scheme is a limited source of funding and is available to organisations who support adults (18 years and over) and who are known to the Trust’s Adult Learning Disability Services.
Geraldine Holmes, Western Trust Project Officer said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for voluntary and community groups to apply for funding which will benefit adults with a learning disability and also allow their parents and carers some time away from their caring role.”
She added: “Grants are available to support various activities or projects including Drop in Centres; Social Clubs; outings; cookery course for carers; arts and crafts; flower arranging; health and fitness classes and drama workshops.”
Mary O’Neill, Foyle Parents and Friends Association Volunteer Committee member and Project Co-ordinator said funding provided by the Western Trust’s Voluntary and Community grant scheme had allowed them to run a ten week Healthy Eating Cookery Course for carers from the Derry area.
She added: “This has been a fantastic opportunity for participants to learn new cookery skills, giving Carers a break from their caring role and also developing friendships with other Carers.”
