The main Derry to Buncrana cross-border road is to close next month to facilitate a major £395,000 road improvements scheme.
The resurfacing scheme of a 1.14km stretch of the road from Skeoge Roundabout to the N13 in the Republic is to begin on Monday next, 26 May, Transport Minister Danny Kennedy has announced.
The work is expected to be completed by 10 June.
Most of the work will be undertaken between 7.00pm and 7.00am with the road being closed on Saturday, 7 June, from 8.00am to 11.00pm.
Diversions will be signposted with traffic travelling towards Derry being diverted from the Buncrana Road roundabout at Bridgend via R238 Buncrana Road, R239 Burnfoot to Muff Road in the Republic and A1002 Culmore Road, A515 Madam’s Bank Road and A515 Skeoge Link Road in Northern Ireland.
Traffic travelling towards Buncrana and Letterkenny will be diverted using a similar route.
Temporary traffic control measures including “stop-go boards” will also be in operation.
Access will be maintained for residents and businesses.
Confirming work on the scheme was to go ahead, Transport Minister Danny Kennedy said as with all improvement schemes of this nature, traffic delays are unavoidable.
He added: “Drivers are advised to allow additional time when travelling in the area.”
Mr Kennedy said the “significant investment” would “greatly improve” the strength and surface quality of the carriageway on “this important cross border route.”
