A resurfacing programme to begin next week on the main Derry-Buncrana road is “only pushing back the timeframe of the major upgrade of road,” Sinn Fein Cllr Tony Hassan has said.
A £395,000 road improvements scheme of a 1.14km stretch of the road from Skeoge Roundabout to the N13 in the Republic will begin on Monday next, 26 May.
The work is expected to be completed by 10 June.
Most of the work will be undertaken between 7.00pm and 7.00am with the road being closed on Saturday, 7 June, from 8.00am to 11.00pm.
However, Cllr Hassan has called on Roads Minister Danny Kennedy and DRD Road Service to “immediately begin the much needed major upgrade” of the road.
Cllr Hassan said as a major arterial route connecting Derry with Donegal, the Buncrana Road was “not capable” of taking the volume of traffic that uses it on a daily basis.
He added: “I believe this work whilst welcome is not the answer and that a full upgrade should happen now rather than wait until the scheduled 2018/2020 time line.
“Major developments have taken place on the Skeoge Road, Culmore Roundabout and the widening of the Madams Bank Road only adds argument to the major upgrade of the Buncrana Road.”
Cllr Hassan concluded: ““As the councillor for the greater Shantallow area I would again call on DRD Roads Service and the Minister Danny Kennedy to complement the Skeoge Link by starting the Buncrana Road immediately.”
