The 82nd anniversary of Amelia Earhart’s historic landing in Derry is to be marked by the opening of a new exhibition in the city tomorrow.
The US aviator became the first woman to fly the Atlantic Ocean solo when she landed her Lockheed Vega plane in a field in Ballyarnett on the outskirts of the city on 21 May, 1932.
The exhibition will open tomorrow on the ground floor of the Northern Counties building in the city centre and will run daily until Saturday from 10.00am to 4.00pm.
The display is being staged by the Amelia Earhart Friendship Society, in partnership with Greater Shantallow Community Arts and Foyle Civic Trust and will be officially opened by Mayor of Derry, Cllr Martin Reilly, at 10.00am tomorrow.
Five years after she landed in Derry, Earhart mysteriously disappeared somewhere in the Pacific while attempting to fly around the world.
