SDLP Councillor Jimmy Carr, who lost the backing of the party last night ahead of tomorrow’s local government election, is to quit the party.
Cllr Carr, a councillor for the past three years and who is standing for re-election in the Ballyarnett ward, said he had no option but to leave the party after the SDLP last night withdrew its support for him in tomorrow’s election.
Earlier this week, it emerged the SDLP had passed a Derry City Council-issued iPad over to the PSNI after alleged “questionable” messages were discovered on the device.
Cllr Carr said he was “devastated” at how the matter had been handled.
Stating he was an “innocent man,” he said he was a victim of a “witch-hunt” orchestrated by elements with the SDLP.
Cllr Carr’s father, also an outgoing councillor seeking re-election in the Moor ward, also hit out at how the SDLP had handled the matter.
He said he would consider his position in the party after tomorrow’s election.
