The Western Health and Social Services Trust has been “highly commended” at the final of a prestigious national award for excellence in maternity care.
The Trust was one of three from across Britain shortlisted for the Healthcare intelligence expert CHKS Excellence in Maternity Care Award.
A panel of maternity and healthcare quality experts had visited Altnagelvin Hospital in Derry to judge the quality of care provided before the winner was announced at the awards ceremony held in London.
Reaching the final, puts the Western Trust’s maternity services in the top three out of 148 National Health Service (NHS) maternity providers in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
The accolade was presented as part of CHKS’s annual Top Hospitals programme awards.
The other two finalists are the East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust and Burton Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
The final three were chosen after an initial shortlist of 15 trusts was drawn up following an analysis of nine clinical indicators including caesarean rates, length of stay, complications, readmissions and injuries, as well as three indicators from the Care Quality Commission’s 2013 maternity survey (for English trusts).
Kieran Downey, Director of Women and Children’s Services at the Western Trust, paid tribute to the Trust’s staff.
He said: “I would like to thank all the staff for their dedication and commitment to ensuring the best possible care for our patients.
“It is a great achievement for our entire Maternity Services team and everyone should take great pride in the quality of care mothers and babies receive in the Western Trust area.
“Reaching the final was an immense honour and publicly acknowledges the high quality of service we provide.”
