The historic election to the Derry-Strabane “super council” has failed to capture the imagination of the North West public with just over half the electorate entitled to vote going to the polls yesterday.
Out of a total electorate of 102,469, 54,317 cast their votes – which equates to a turnout of 53.1 per cent, the average for elections in recent years.
Counting for the seven District Electoral Areas (DEAs) is ongoing at Templemore Sports Complex.
A total of 74 candidates have put their names forward for the new council in Derry and Strabane.
They will represent seven newly-created wards – Ballyarnett, Derg, Faughan, Foyleside, The Moor, Waterside and Sperrin.
The new “super council” will initially operate in shadow form before becoming fully amalgamated on 1 April next year.
The first results are expected to be declared at around teatime today.
The result of the election for the European Parliament – for which there was a turnout of 53.42 per cent in Derry/Strabane – will not be known until Monday, the Northern Ireland count taking place in the King’s Hall in Belfast along with the other EU member countries.
