Cllr Brian Tierney.

SDLP Councillor Brian Tierney has retained his seat in the Ballyarnett District Electoral Area (DEA) in the election for the new Derry-Strabane “super council.”

He was elected on the fifth count having gained 963 first preference votes.

With Sinn Fein’s Sandra Duffy, Tony Hassan and the SDLP’s Angela Dobbins already elected, it leaves two seats to be filled in the six-seater DEA.

They are expected to be filled by Independent Dermot (Dee) Quigley, a first time candidate, and sitting Sinn Fein Cllr Elisha McCallion.

That means the SDLP will lose a seat with Cllr Jimmy Carr not being re-elected.
