Jimmy Carr, the SDLP candidate who lost the support of the SDLP just two days before yesterday’s historic election for the new Derry-Strabane “super council,” has failed to get re-elected.
The 27-year-old, who stood in the Ballyarnett District Electoral Area, gained only 665 first preference votes and crashed out on the sixth count.
The seat, won by Carr for the SDLP three years ago, has been filled by first-time Independent candidate Dermot (Dee) Quigley who is fronting a campaign for the establishment of detox centre in the North West.
Also elected on the sixth count was sitting Sinn Fein Cllr Elisha McCallion.
Ballyarnett is the first DEA of the new “super council” to be completed.
Its make-up is as follows: Sandra Duffy, Tony Hassan and Elisha McCallion (all Sinn Fein), Angela Dobbins and Brian Tierney (both SDLP) and Independent Dermot (Dee) Quigley.
