Former Mayor of Derry Gerard Diver and one-time city Deputy Mayor Mary Hamilton have become the fourth and fifth councillors elected on to the new Derry-Strabane “super council.”
The SDLP representative topped the poll in the Waterside Electoral Area (DEA) after the first count with 1080 votes, 25 short of the quota. He was elected on the second count.
He was joined by former Deputy Mayor, Ulster Unionist Cllr Mary Hamilton, who was elected on the fifth count after getting 1046 in the first count.
There are seven seats up for grabs in the DEA and they are expected to be joined by Sinn Fein’s Christopher Jackson, a first-time candidate, who had 1053 votes after the first count, just 62 short of the quota.
Current Mayor of Derry, Cllr Martin Reilly, is also expected to be re-elected after getting 884 votes in the first count.
The DUP’s Drew Thompson and Hilary McClintock, who polled 607 and 811 respectively in the first count, are also predicted to be elected.
