Sean Carr was the final candidate to be elected on to the new Derry-Strabane “super council.”
Almost 26 hours after the ballot boxes were opened, the SDLP representative was deemed elected without reaching the quota in The Moor District Electoral Area (DEA) after a sixth and final count, just pipping his party colleague first-time candidate Emmet Doyle.
The election of prominent dissident republican supporter, who stood as an Independent, resulted in the SDLP losing a seat in this DEA – the party’s third loss in the historic election.
Also elected in five-seat Moor DEA were Sinn Fein’s Kevin Campbell, Patricia Logue and Colly Kelly.
Sinn Fein will be the largest party with 16 seats on the new 40-seat Derry-Strabane “super council,” followed by the SDLP (10), DUP (8), Independent (4) and Ulster Unionists (2)
