Counting in the European Parliament election will begin this morning in the King’s Hall in Belfast.
A total 10 candidates are seeking election and with the turnout at the polls on Thursday last estimated at over 50 per cent, it is expected the three sitting MEPs will be returned for another term.
They are Diane Dodds, of the Democratic Unionist Party, the wife of DUP MP Nigel Dodds, Jim Nicholson of the Ulster Unionist Party and Sinn Fein’s Martina Anderson.
Ms Anderson, from Derry’s Bogside, has been an MEP since she replaced party colleague Bairbre de Brún in May 2012, having previously served as an MLA on the Northern Ireland Assembly from 2007.
The 10 candidates are:

• Ross Brown, Green Party
• Tina McKenzie, N21
• Martina Anderson, Sinn Fein
• Alex Attwood, Social Democratic and Labour Party
• Jim Allister, Traditional Unionist Voice
• Henry Reilly, UKIP (United Kingdom Indpendence Party)
• Jim Nicholson, Ulster Unionist Party
