Police are investigating what they have described as a suspicious approach to an elderly man in the village of Feeny in Co Derry.
Details of the incident, which occurred on Thursday morning last, have just been released by Limavady police.
The man was walking along Main Street when a man in a car stopped with him, the driver telling him he wanted to give him “a blessing” before accompanying him to his home.
However, after discovering the man’s son was at home, the driver changed his mind and offered to give the man a blessing in the car.
He asked for £20 but as given £15.
A PSNI spokesperson said: “The incident has raised suspicions that this was an attempt to gain access to the house and steal money or property.”
The spokesperson said police in Limavady were keen to hear from anyone who saw a light green car in the Feeney area between 11.00am and noon on Thursday last, 22 May.
It is thought the vehicle had religious relics on display.
Police are also asking people to stress to elderly relatives or neighbours that they should not allow strangers into their homes nor should they get into cars with strangers.
The PSNI spokesperson said information could be given on the police non-emergency number 101.
Alternatively, it can be provided to the Crimestoppers charity anonymously on 0800 555 111.
