The Derry “LondonDerry” Doire has stormed to top of the leaderboard on day four of race 13 in the Clipper Round the World Yacht race which sees the fleet sail the 1,500 mile crossing from Antonio to New York.
The Derry Clipper, along with Old Pulteney, took advantage of a change in the wind conditions to pass early leader Henri Lloyd.
However, Sean McCarter, skipper of the Derry entry, expects things to get tight as a result of another change in conditions which has seen the breeze “die.”
He said: “We managed to average six to seven knots during the lighter breeze this morning which was marginally better than expected.
“With kite up a small increase in wind speed has allowed us to average nine knots for several hours now but I fear this will be shortlived before the next light patch.
“Hopefully, we can drag our way through it and into the new breeze before the start of the Ocean Sprint in 150 miles time.”
After arriving in New York, the fleet will set sail on race 14 of 17 to Derry.
